individuals receiving IRS Notice cp53e

IRS NOTICE CP53E

We are aware that many taxpayers are receiving IRS Notice CP53E regarding tax refunds and banking information. While CP53E is a legitimate IRS notice, we are also seeing a significant number of fraudulent versions circulating designed to steal personal and banking information.


If you receive a CP53E notice, please do not scan QR codes, click links, or call phone numbers listed on the letter. The safest way to verify the notice is to manually log in to your IRS Online Account at www.IRS.gov and confirm the notice appears there. IRS employees cannot update banking information for you by phone or email.

In some cases, CP53E notices have been issued in error due to recent IRS system changes related to electronic refunds. You may not need to take any action at all; if no response is made, the IRS typically issues a paper check.


Your Options

You have two valid options, and there is no penalty for choosing either:


Option 1 – Update Your Bank Information
If you want your refund issued by direct deposit, you may log into (or create) your IRS Online Account at www.irs.gov and follow the instructions in the notice. This must be done within the time frame stated on the notice and can only be completed by you directly through the IRS website.


Option 2 – Take No Action
If you do nothing, the IRS will generally issue a paper check by mail after processing. This typically takes several weeks.


Our Recommendation

If you are unsure whether the notice is genuine or are uncomfortable providing information online, do not respond on your own. Forward the notice to our office and we will review it with you.
